Philip Williams AM

Biography

Dr Philip Williams AM is an economist and founding member of Frontier Economics.

He specialises in the application of economics to legal disputes in such areas as trade practices, access disputes, valuing damages, intellectual property and contractual disputes. He regularly acts as an expert witness before courts and tribunals.

Prior to joining Frontier Economics, Philip taught full-time at the University of Melbourne from 1978 to February 200. At the time, he was the Professor of Law and Economics in the Melbourne Business School at the University.

Mergers

Philip provides advice to law firms and competition regulators concerning the likely effects of mergers on competition. Examples include:

  • Advising lawyers for ANZ Bank in its application for authorisation of its acquisition of Suncorp Bank.
  • Advising lawyers for ACCC on the likely effects on competition of the offer by Australian Clinical Labs to acquire Healius pathology services.
  • Advising the New Zealand Commerce Commission of the likely effects on competition of THL Group’s potential acquisition of Apollo Tourism and Leisure Limited.

Public Policy

Philip provides advice on a range of issues of public policy - from valuing damages, valuing intellectual property rights and assisting government inquiries. Examples include:
