The Australian state Government of Victoria today published its response to the recommendations of the Victorian Taxi Industry Inquiry, that it set up in March 2011. The Inquiry’s task was to address issues of poor service quality and low levels of public confidence in taxi services in Victoria. Most of the Inquiry’s 139 recommendations were accepted in full by the Government. The key measures focused on freeing up the restrictive taxi licensing structure, amending taxi zones, improvements to driver testing and remuneration, fare re-structuring and removing unnecessary regulatory burdens on taxis as well as for pre-booked hire car services. The Government will now move to legislate the first set of reforms proposed in the second half of 2013.

Warwick Davis from Frontier (Australia) was seconded to the Inquiry as the Director of Economics.
