Ben Matsumoto

Ben is an economist at Frontier Economics working in our energy and renewables practice. He advises governments, network businesses and market participants in the National Electricity Market (NEM).

Ben’s work focuses on using energy market modelling (including our proprietary energy42 model), optimisation and quantitative analysis to advise on system planning projects, wholesale price forecasts and portfolio optimisation.

Examples of projects he has worked on include:

• Assessed the consumer benefits of a proposed Energy Zone in New South Wales that regulators subsequently authorised.
• Analysed the economic impact to the NEM of closing a coal-fired generator earlier than anticipated.
• Delivered and maintained numerous energy price forecasts, supporting market participants in making informed decisions about portfolio revenue and asset operations.
• Developed an optimisation model for CleanCo to determine the right sizing of future assets to meet contracting positions across a range of future market scenarios.

Prior to joining Frontier Economics, Ben worked as a consultant at Endgame Analytics. He holds a degree in engineering, with first class honours and the University Medal in mechatronic engineering from The University of Sydney.
